I thought we’d end the year with a laugh at my expense.
Last week I was booked to speak for the Warringah Chamber of Commerce in Dee Why, just North of Sydney, Australia.
I flew down to Sydney from Brisbane on the beautiful Gold Coast in plenty of time for the talk.
Knowing the importance of this, my first event in Australia, I drove and scoped out the venue the day I arrived so I knew where to go on the day, makes sense, right? Last thing I wanted to do was to get lost, not know where to park etc. Preparation is key.
But what followed caused a little panic… to say the least.
It was a breakfast meeting I was to speak at, due to start at 6.45 am, followed by me delivering a two hour master class.
So, on the day, I arrived at 6.20am, got parked up and walked a short way up the street to the venue. I knew where it was… or thought I did.
At 6.30, the venue was still locked and nobody was home… 6.45 when the meeting was due to start – nothing, nobody around. Panic started to set in. 7.00am… no change.
I checked my phone for contact details of the organiser. No phone number, (stupid me) so I pinged an email stating I was outside… where was everyone? To make things worse, my phone battery was about to die too.
I figured I must be at the wrong venue. A short walk up the hill was a local police station. I walked on in and asked for help.
“Can you help me gents, I’m looking for the Mater Builders Club, I’m meant to speaking there today.”
“Yes Sir, no problem, straight down the hill on the right?”
“Yep, that’s where I’ve been, but there’s nobody there. Is there another one in town? Am I just at the wrong location?”
“No Sir, that’s the one and only.”
Was I going mad? I showed them the email details on my phone.
“It’s says 6.45am right?”
“It says Master Builders Club, Dee Why… right?”
“Yes Sir. Are you talking about time management Sir?” The officer asked with a smile.
“The jet lag has really buggered you up Sir… according to this email… you’re not speaking there until tomorrow.”
So even having prepared, scoped the venue out the night before… we can all make mistakes.
I’m pleased to report it went well once I got the date right.
“It has been a pleasure to have Steve come and speak at our event; he added a huge amount of value to our audience with his knowledge and expertise. Steve not only delivers his clear core content that is practical and can be implemented into your business straight away, but Steve also makes it fun adding humour to engage his audience. I would have no hesitation in recommending Steve to come and speak at your next event and I hope he’ll be back to speak for us again in the future”
Sandy Banfield, Warringah Chamber Of Commerce – Dee Why.
